“Behind every man now alive stand 30 ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living.”

So says Arthur C Clarke in 2001: A Space Odyssey. But was he right?

Ask most people if they believe in ghosts and they’ll look at you with a palpable level of disdain. You might as well have asked them if Lord of the Rings was based on a true story as far as they’re concerned. The argument against the existence of ghosts seems to be so overwhelming that there is little point in even entertaining the idea. It is not a subject taken very seriously.

Despite this, plenty of people do believe in ghosts. Visit any library and there are shelves of books devoted to the paranormal, whereas the internet is flooded with people who can’t wait to share details of their own supernatural experiences. Most of these can safely be considered fictional; the demented ramblings of attention-seeking lunatics. But can they all be dismissed so easily? Is there really a rational explanation for every strange occurrence? Or could there be a small seed of truth hidden beneath all of the nonsense?

Frankly, we want answers. Using a combination of research and ill-informed, reactionary opinion, Looking For Ghosts will clumsily attempt to settle the debate which has been raging for centuries: do ghosts exist?
